Endocrinologists
What is an Endocrinologist?
An endocrinologist is a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine diseases, such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, metabolic conditions, infertility, menopause, and pituitary disorders. Endocrinologists diagnose and treat diseases that affect the body's glands. These conditions are often complex and can involve many systems of the body. Some endocrinologists focus only on one or two endocrine system diseases, such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, pediatric conditions, or reproductive and menstrual disorders. Others work in all areas of endocrinology.
Training for endocrinologists generally takes over ten years. This process includes four years of medical school followed by at least three years in an internship and residency program to specialize in an area, such as internal medicine, pediatrics, or obstetrics and gynecology. Physicians working to become endocrinologists then spend at least two years learning how to diagnose and treat hormone imbalances and disorders.
